By the year 1950, over 400 institutes had introduced majors inphysical education. The Young Men's Christian Association launched its very firstchapter in 1851 and focused on physical activities. But physical education became aformal requirement following the civil war when many states opted to pass laws thatrequired schools to incorporate a substantial physical education component intotheir curriculums.
