The Server Side: Application Servers Application servers run with a separate servlet container or servlet engine providing the Java Virtual machine (JVM) and managing the communication between the servlet and the server. Tomcat, a free (open-source) server from the Apache Software Foundation is an application server providing a servlet container (called Catalina). The HTTP/1.1 communication component is called Coyote! see Apache Geronimo project Glassfish is the latest application server from Oracle (originally Sun Microsystems) that provides support for Java EE 5 and its extensions. It also contains a browser-based as well as a command-line administration tool. When you install the Glassfish server you create a domain . The server instance runs in a domain which provides authentication and administration for the server instance. Anatomy Of The Simple Servlet The javax.servlet and javax.servlet.http pac kages provide the API (classes and interfaces) All servlets must inherit the GenericServlet
