Madeline Talbert CE 353 – Professional Seminar Dr. Nadim Aziz April 7, 2008 The Vision for Civil Engineering in 2025 In this constantly growing world, it is the responsibility of every engineer to look forward into the future and be prepared for what is to come. This world has become one of depleting natural resources and extreme population growth, two negative effects on an already struggling world. It is the duty of civil engineers to be prepared for the coming years when the world will be dependent on the leaders of our community to create a world that can sustain a world “well on its way to a population exceeding 10 billion people in 2050” (ASCE 2005). Power has become a forefront issue in civil engineering’s planning for the future. Resources such as hydroelectricity, wind-generated electricity, and coal are going to be the future of our power sources. Reports made in 2005 state that the demand for hydroelectric power will increase by at least by 23,000 MW by the year 2025. 10,000
