1 1 Course Overview & Defining Emotions The Science of Human Emotions 2 3 The scientific study of emotion ± Science – a philosophy and systematic set of techniques for making observations. ± Using controlled, valid, reliable methods to seek OBJECTIVE observation and measurement ± Peer review of hypotheses and results ± NOT armchair theorizing of untestable ideas ± Scientific study of emotion is possible, however, there are obstacles to overcome. 4 Difficulties with scientific study of emotion ± Emotions largely subjective – how do you measure this? ± Difficult to (ethically) elicit emotions in the lab ± time consuming and difficult to measure ± Measurements can interfere with natural emotional process 5 6 Introduction to Emotion ± What are emotions? ± What is the difference between emotions, moods, sentiments? ± How can emotions be studied and measured in the lab?
