Reinelly RosarioSS3544-OL3Due Date: May 12, 2021Critical Thinking PaperThe Effects of the Social Issue of PovertyAround the GlobeFor this case study I was intrigued to focus on a particular issue rather than acountry so that I have the opportunity to discuss multiple countries. There are by farmany global issues that are unfortunately becoming norms in today’s society and one thatI will like to elaborate on is poverty. Its relevance, and importance in my opinion, outweighs many other issues. The world is experiencing a tipping point against its neverending find with the issue of poverty. In every country of the world there are peopleliving in poverty. Even in the world’s richest countries the poorest people often live inpoor housing and struggle to afford basic goods and services like heating, transport, andhealthy food for themselves and their family. Whilst doing research I discovered that it ispredicted that by next year, 2022, more than half of the world’s people that are currentlyliving in extreme poverty will be living in fragile states meaning worse, according to theWorld Data Lab. I believe that the topic’s relevance for this course allows for a clearerunderstanding of comparisons between different political social and political systems.Although poverty is often discussed in terms of dollar amounts, quality of life isalso part of the conversation as living in poverty could also mean a life of struggle anddeprivation. Living in poverty also means not being able to afford a doctor or medicaltreatment. It means no electricity, limited shelter, and often little to no food on the table. This is a huge problem when taking into account the young children that suffer alongwith these families as improper nutrition can mean wasting and can potentiallypermanently impact their development. This is the case in countries such as South Sudan,Afghanistan, South Yemen, and many more. In poor countries where many people lackaccess to clean water and sanitation, poverty means the spread of preventable diseasesand the unnecessary death of children. To think that there are so many children all aroundthe world suffering because their families can not afford to put food on the table is so sad. When discussing extreme poverty, it can be identified in two ways: absolute poverty andrelative poverty. It is also important to note that poverty is measured by each country’sgovernment, which gathers data through household surveys of their own population.
