Brooke SwiftSociology 461Reading Analysis #4 The article by Christine Williams entitled “The Glass Escalator: Hidden Advantages for Men in the “Female” Professions deals with sex segregation within the U.S labor force. Specifically she focuses on the underrepresentation of men in four major labor fields: nursing, elementary education, librarianship, and social work. She argues that like women, men experience the gender discrimination and difficulties entering women dominated fields that women do when trying to enter male dominated fields. Using a snowball method of sampling and reviewing responses to questions about discrimination in the hiring process from both men and women she came to very interesting realizations about the hiring process of men.
