Brooke SwiftSociology 461Reading Analysis #3 The article by Paula England titled “Desegregation Stalled: The Changing Composition of College Majors” discusses the reasons why, since 1971 until 2002, gender segregation in baccalaureate fields has been declining. The first reason derives from the theoretical perspective that our culture devalues women and therefore men are less inclined to make non-traditional choices when it comes to majors commonly filled with women. On the flip side of that coin, when women enter predominately male fields, they are thought to be entering a field that is more highly valued. One of the main reasons for this is the pay and status associated with male fields. To test this hypothesis, they used the data published in the National Center for Education Statistics on the number of women and men receiving bachelor’s degrees in all fields of study from academic year 1970-1971 to 2001-2002.
