Material Properties of Steel and Concrete (CIVL2201 Structural Mechanics 2020)1 INTRODUCTIONThe aim of this report is to describe tests to investigate the material properties of steel in tensionand concrete in compression, and in particular, present the stress-strain curves. Stress and strain aretwo of the most important parameters within Structural Mechanics as they determine whether astructure will hold, deform or fail under certain loads. Throughout recent times, applied engineeringhas moved towards larger-scale buildings and structures.With steel and concrete being essentialmaterials within Structural Engineering, it is critical to assess their properties such as stiffness,ductility and strength. This is done by considering the difference in geometry and calculating theresistance against uniaxial loads.
