On theother hand, it was found that the concrete exhibited non-linear and non-elastic behaviour. It had anundefined yield stress due to its non-linear relationship between stress and strain. It also had anultimate strength of 39 MPa and an elastic modulus of 33 GPa. The strain of failure was seen to beat 0.63%.

Material Properties of Steel and Concrete (CIVL2201 Structural Mechanics 2020)1 INTRODUCTIONThe aim of this report is to describe tests to investigate the material properties of steel in tensionand concrete in compression, and in particular, present the stress-strain curves. Stress and strain aretwo of the most important parameters within Structural Mechanics as they determine whether astructure will hold, deform or fail under certain loads. Throughout recent times, applied engineeringhas moved towards larger-scale buildings and structures.With steel and concrete being essentialmaterials within Structural Engineering, it is critical to assess their properties such as stiffness,ductility and strength. This is done by considering the difference in geometry and calculating theresistance against uniaxial loads. Through tensile and compression testing, a stress-strain curve canbe developed which provides critical information about Young’s Modulus, yield strength and any
