Literacy Autobiographies My family has never been readers. Most of my family comes from a low socioeconomic class. I was the first one in my family to go to college and aspire to be a teacher. Growing up, my mom was a single mother who worked two full-time jobs to keep a roof over our heads. When she had my older brother, she read to him every night. They would read chapter books together before he was in 1st grade. After having two kids, there was too much for her to do, and she barely had time to read with us. Around the time I was supposed to be learning to read and write, I became frustrated. I did not have the support nor will to learn. I did not even know how to write my name until I was in the middle of my third-grade year. I moved from house to house and school to school because my mother could not afford rent most of the time. This made it even more difficult to be motivated to learn how to read and write.
