History Notes – 4/3/06 THE INTERWAR WARS (1919-1939) I. Apparent Victory for Democracy “W.W.I had made the world safe for Democracy” -------W. Wilson * Maintain peace through the League of Nations * WWI did not make the world safe for Democracy A. The New Europe: * New Europe, New World * Old Empires, monarchies – Destroyed * Treaty of Versailles – Germany would lose its imperial colonies * Russia – Romanovs are out * Austro-Hungarian Empire * Yugoslavia * Turkey – Finishing touches – * Romania, Greece, Romania * Newly emerged Turkey – nationalistic principles, defined borders – emerges as an independent country B. Post War Challenges: 1. Economic * Unemployment due to Veterans returning * Inflation – High inflation in every country that participated in WWI * Reparations themselves would cause significant economic despair 2. Political * Homeless masses * Refugees * All new nations created by the war have written constitutions * Universal male suffrage * In some places, women got the right to vote
