Japanese Militarism and Aggression * Modernization in Japan continued and stepped it up after WWI * Japanese government adopts a very aggressive plan of aggression * Japan is an island and limited in its resources * Parallel to Great Britain (Japan) * Japanese set out in a bold way to become the most dominant people in East * They established the Greater East Asia CO-Prosperity sphere – Their version of the Monroe doctrine * Extreme Nationalism – Fascist regime came to power in the Interwar Years – it incorporated extreme nationalism – military leaders like Hodecki Tojo – very active in the government – New Cult religion is widely popular – Shinto – “Way of the gods” – Emperor worship * They see themselves as the most dominant, superior of all Asian people – they are dominant – see the Western world as Decadent * Bushido – “Way of the Warrior” – Code of Conduct – certain respect, way of honoring the Japanese traditions – strict code of conduct * Japanese are literally ready to take off * First act of aggr3ession – 1931 – Japanese invade Manchuria (Northern province of
