History Notes - 1/6/06 * Assignot - Paper money that would be printed by the new government and could be used to buy parcels of land - Without the backing of gold, was worthless * The new government raised money by seizing the lands of the émigrés (aristocrats) and selling them for money * Abolished guilds * Compagnonnages - Labor unions that were formed throughout the country * The Le Chapelier - Prohibited unions throughout the country - Workers could not organize themselves in that way - jobs could be worked by anyone - take away threat of labor movement * Government seized church properties and sold them to generate revenue * Civil Constitution of the Clergy - Gov't was taking control of all religions in France * Bishops, including parish priests were to be elected - these positions are becoming very political and consequently, secular * All clergy were to receive salaries from the state * Prohibited the taking of religious vows - confiscated monastery lands * National Assembly required all clergy to take an oath of loyalty to the government - those who
