History Notes - 1/10/06 * French nationalism is at a pique - in spite of all of the critical issues * National spirit * National convention - given French generals the power to dissolve any governments in their path - FRENCH REVOLUTION IS BECOMING INTERNATIONAL * 1st Coalition - Not very strong - the sentiment is not there yet to destroy the French Army - WEAK BECAUSE OF PETTY JEALOUSIES - Each member is leery of the other members as to what they want to get out of the war * Great Britain could not land an army to aid the war efforts because they did not HAVE an army to land * Revolutionists want to create a democratic government * Girandan - Now no longer the advanced radicals (they are considered conservative) - new radical group * Montagnards - "The Mountain" - Comes from the fact that they sat up higher in the meeting hall - REPRESENT A MORE RADICAL ELEMENT * Girandan - Represent the great cities - Montagnard - represented rural areas and Paris (Paris was always radical) * Popular group - The "Sans Coulette" - Blue collar workers - wore long trousers - those of the upper class - wore shorter pants (the Coulette - they did not work as hard each day - wealthy)
