History Notes - 11/21/05 Section 35: "Political Theory: The School of Natural Law" * The first modern political theorist - Machiavelli - In his work "The Prince " - he advocated a Republican form of government * He was not an idealist - was a realist - concerned himself with whatever "worked" - the best government was the one that "worked" - he separated theology/religion from politics * Machiavelli stated that you must do whatever is necessary to advance their political power * Machiavelli chose to not be moral - do what you have to do - was not moral or immoral -- just kept it separate from government * In the 17th Century - to see if there were any natural laws that existed regarding government - what is right? Are there natural laws that distinguish right from wrong - they believed that laws existed naturally - they believed that these laws existed outside all people - they believed that natural laws were above all people * Positive laws - made by people based on customs and traditions
