You’ll work on developingyour basic French grammar and vocabulary, with practice in listening comprehension, speaking,reading, and writing. You’ll also be exposed to the French-speaking cultures which are found allover the globe.As such, the program is aligned both with theStandards for Foreign LanguageLearning in the 21st Centuryand with the Critical Thinking Initiative of the University ofLouisville.Student Learning Outcomes:By the end of FREN 123 (the final course in the IntroductoryFrench sequence), successful students should be able to express themselves clearly on manysubjects in simple French. They should be able to initiate, maintain, and close simpleconversations by asking and responding to simple questions. They should be able to makethemselves understood, with some repetition, by speakers accustomed to dealing with non-native
speakers. They should also be able to demonstrate an understanding of the cultures of theFrench-speaking world.Relation to Cardinal Core (General Education) Requirements: The Cardinal Core Programand the Basic French Program at the University of Louisville foster active learning by askingstudents to think critically, to communicate effectively, and to understand and appreciate culturaldiversity. () A passing course grade (or itsequivalent) in each of the courses comprising the three-semester Introductory French sequence(FREN 121, 122, 123), fulfills the foreign language requirement for the Bachelor of Arts degree.Assessment:Unité Section Tests:At the end of each chapter section (called “Unités”), tests will beadministered online (5 total).
