GLST 650Book Review“Any groups or individuals that must communicate on a daily basis with culturallydiverse coworkers, clients, or customers can reap the rewards of acquiring the awareness, knowledge, and skills of flexible intercultural communication. Intercultural communicationknowledge and skills are needed to solve problems, manage conflicts, and forge new visions onboth global and domestic levels.”1This quote from Ting-Toomey and Chung’s bookUnderstanding Intercultural Communicationsums up quite nicely what they are trying to conveyin their book. The authors work together to properly show that each and every person not onlyshould use intercultural communication but, that they also can obtain the skills to do it right.Their approach to this comes in a worldview that is not exactly Christian and they at timesinterpret different areas in the discussions with their own worldview biases. This at times can bea weakness to the authors, however, their strengths lie in the details that they provide to eacharea. They touch on a variety of things that one can connect to culture such as culture shock, intercultural communication flexibility, value patterns, technology, language, etc. The detailprovided for these areas allows the reader to examine what they are discussing more deeplyexamine each point. This allows one to make properly informed decisions in interculturalsituations. However, the authors do not provide information on whether others may disagree withsome of the things that they are discussing rather they just provide it all as fact. This work wouldbest be used to gather information, but it should not be used by itself.
