Introduction
Assessment is a means of finding out what learning is taking place, as well as specific
knowledge and skills. It is very useful to identify all the activities and skills which learners
will carry out, the conditions under which perform tasks and activities, the possible results
which might be obtained, and the standards by which performance will be measured.

BASIC CONCEPTS IN ASSESSMENT
 Assessment of Learning
 focuses on the development and utilization of assessment tools to improve the
teaching-learning process;
 it emphasizes on the use of testing for measuring knowledge, comprehension and
other thinking skills;
 it is also a means of finding out what learning is taking place and emphasizes to
measure other changes in behavior related to ”personality”, social skills, interests,
learning styles, among others.
 Different Terminologies :
Assessment
- refers to the different components and activities of different schools;
- defined as act or process of collecting and interpreting information about student
learning;
- a systematic process of gathering, interpreting and using this information about
student learning
Test
- the most common form of assessment is giving a test
- is formal and systematic instrument, usually paper and pencil procedure designed to
assess the quality, ability, skill or knowledge of the students by giving a set of
question in uniform manner .
Testing
- is one of the different methods used to measure the level of performance or
achievement of the student.

- also refers to the administration, scoring and interpretation of
the procedures designed to get information about the extent of
the performance of the students.
Measurement
- is a process of quantifying or assigning number to the
individual’s intelligences, personality, attitudes and values,
and achievement of the students;
- expresses the assessment data in terms of numerical values
and answers the question, “how much?”
Ex.: 1. The student named Mia got 23 correct answers out of 25
items in Science.
2. Kayla got 95% in her English first grading periodic test.
Evaluation
- refers to the process of judging the quality of what is good and
what is desirable;
- it is the comparison of the data to a set of standard or learning
criteria for the
purpose of judging the worth or quality.
