Who is part of the “Aging Population”?
What happens to our body systems as we age?
THY 300: Exercise and AgingCardiovascularAerobic Performance declines.Average VO2max peaks in the 20s andthen falls about 1% per year.Structural Changes in the Heart.Boththe heart and vasculature undergonumerous alterations during aging asa result of deregulation of molecularlongevity pathways, leading tocompromised function: Cardiaccapacity can be reduced and cardiacfunction impaired,Loss of cardiacmuscle, Loss of elasticity in cardiacmuscle, Thickening of left ventricle,Fibrotic changes in the valves, Loss ofelasticity in major blood vessels.Respiratory Changes With AgingRespiratory muscle strength decreases with age and can impair effective cough, which is important forairway clearance. The lung matures by age 20–25 years, and thereafter aging is associated withprogressive decline in lung function.Decreased pulmonary function as we age is due to increasedresidual volume due to the decreased elasticity of the lung tissue.
