TERMPAPER GUIDELINE This course requires students to write a 1500 word essay. The essay may pertain to either of the following works: Voltaire’s “Candide” or Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness.” A third option is to write a biography of a veteran of the Second World War, Korean War or Vietnam War based on interviews carried out by you. You are to address ONE of the following questions in your essay: 1. What philosophical ideas are being satirized in “Candide?” Which character expresses those ideas most consistently? How do they relate to the beliefs generally held by the philosophes of the Enlightenment? Does Voltaire offer a coherent alternative to the ideas he mocks? 2. The cataclysmic Lisbon earthquake is a centrepiece of “Candide.” This incident had a transformative effect on Voltaire. How do you feel his reaction is expressed in the novel?
