Chem 109 Exam 1 Summary Sheet Chapter 1 States of Matter – know three states and what they look like at the atomic level Classification of Matter – be able to classify a given substance and/or recognize an atomic level diagram of each classification. (see diagram / flow chart on page 9 of Tro book) Physical vs. Chemical – be able to identify physical and chemical properties and changes Unit Conversions – be able to convert between units (including multidimensional units like density). Know all metric prefixes. English to metric units will be given on exam. Temperature Conversions – be able to convert between the three temperature scales. Scientific Notation – be able to express numbers in standard and/or scientific notation, especially to signify the correct number of significant figures. Precision vs. Accuracy – be able to distinguish the precision and accuracy of a given set of data.
