The Westward Movement A. Manifest Destiny was an idea circulating in the 1840's & 50's A continental vision for the U.S. Term for this: Manifest Destiny The term was coined in 1845 by John L. O'Sullivan editor of Democratic morning News He wrote: "Our Manifest Destiny is to over-spread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions." he scope of this varied: sea to sea? into Mexico ? just Oregon? B. By 1830's & 40's settlement in the west was limited Some settlers had pushed into TX district of Mexico, and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints had settled Utah at this time But few others had moved west of 95th Meridian - the western boundary of Arkansas and Missouri
