Chapter 23 The United States and the Cold War Origins of the Cold War 1945-1953 The United States emerged from WW2 as the world’s greatest power The only power close was the Soviet Union George Kennan Long Telegram: advised the Truman administration that the Soviets could not be dealt as a normal government Kennan was the originator of the containment policy His telegram laid the foundation of the policy containment: the U.S. committed itself to preventing further expansion of the Soviet The U.S. aided Greece and Turkey Truman Doctrine: stated that the U.S. would support Greece and Turkey with economic and military aid to prevent them from falling into the Soviet sphere George Marshall pledged the United States to contribute billions of dollars to finance the economic recovery of Europe The Marshall Plan: U.S. foreign-policy initiative that envisioned a New Deal for Europe, and pledged billions of dollars to finance European economic recovery
