The most critical reason theories are important in clinical social work practice because social workers must understand a client’s behaviors and their social environment (Gordan & Mackay, 2016). To do this, they must understand theories. Theories help to explain these behaviors and how society works. When a social worker has knowledge of theories, they are usually more confident and secure in their job. They can help determine treatment or plans for their clients more easily, by using interventions or skills that may have worked in the past when working with a client with a similar diagnosis. The social issue I plan to work with is children and adolescents from low-income communities. Theories can be used for this issue to be help this population. In low-income communities, it is usually minorities living in that area. Theories would be help when working with them, because they can provide information on how social workers have helped individuals in the past who have lived in a similar community or may be dealing with the same issue of having low income.
