History 103 01/04/2008 10:02:00 4/1/08 V. World War II The question of when exactly the war broke out is not a clear answer.  The combatants. Axis     Germany (1939) Italy (1935-1936) – Made trouble in Ethiopia before the war even started. Japan (1931, 1937) – Tried to take over China (?) Allies       U.K. (1939) – Got involved after the invasion of Poland. France (1939) Russia (1941) – Nazi-Soviet Pact (non-aggression pact). Germany attacked  Russia, Russia responded defensively. USA (1941) – Pearl Harbor Blitzkrieg (Lightening War)  -  bombing, tanks, and people all simultaneously  (pretty much) Phony War  – war propaganda, try to scare the enemy. Convince them to not fight  for the enemy. Life will be spared if you switch sides.
