The Compromise of 1850, the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the Dred Scott decision all played critical roles in the controversy between the northern and southern states.“Faced with the mounting crisis, moderates and unionist spent the winter of 1849-1850 trying to frame a great compromise” (Brinkley 323). The Compromise of 1850 was a series of five bills which included; California as a free state, formation of territorial governments in the rest of the lands acquired from Mexico without any restrictions on slavery, the abolition of the slave trade, a more effective Fugitive Slave Act, and Texas being awarded 10 million for its loss of New Mexico territory. The Compromise of 1850 played an important role in delaying the civil war.
