The Great Arab Revolt British looked for ways to topple Turks. Looked for ally in the region. Chose Sherif Hussein Bin Ali Al-Hashimi. Held most prestigious Arab-Islamic position within O.E./very ambitious. Distrusted the CUP on political and religious grounds. Devoted first years in office to construction of network of tribal alliances that would enable him to obtain a greater degree of autonomy from Istanbul. July 1915- Hussein sends letter to British High Commissioner in Egypt, Sir Henry McMahon, setting forth conditions that might persuade him to enter into alliance w/ Britain and to launch a revolt against O.E. This was the beginning of the famous Hussein-McMahon

The Great Arab Revolt On June 10, 1916 the Great Arab Revolt was launched when an Arab and British army of up to 70,000 men moved against Ottoman forces. Sherif Hussein tried to appeal to cause of Islamic solidarity. Tried to portray his action as a duty to Islam and called on all Muslims to depose the atheistic CUP. Did not attack the caliph! Called on Muslims to rise up and liberate the caliph from the clutches of the CUP....
