WWI 1914-1918 Central Powers of Russia, Britain and France vs. Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary, Germany Russia eventually pulled out in 1917 due to the outbreak of the Bolshevik Revolution. WWI profoundly affected political, diplomatic, military, economic, and social matters in the central Arab states/Iran/Egypt. Dec. 18, 1914, Britain unilaterally declared establishment of a protectorate over Egypt , thus ending its flimsy association with the Ottoman Empire. Ottoman Sultan Mehmed VI proclaimed a jihad hoping to induce Muslims under European rule to rebel, but widespread revolts failed
