Lab 7: Charting Financial Statement Data, Fall 2007 Instructions for Microsoft Excel Lab #7 (15 pts) This assignment is due at the beginning of your recitation class on Friday, November 16. Students will create charts based on information from the financial statements for Staples, Inc. and Office Depot, Inc. Each student should complete this assignment independently. LINE GRAPH Create a line graph showing profitability ratios for each company. 1. Select the Profit Ratios work sheet on this file. Enter the dollar amounts for Sales, Gross Margin (Profit) and Net Income (Earnings) based on information from the income statements. Note the year order on the work sheet. 2. Use formulas to calculate the Gross Margin percentage and Profit Margin percentage for each year (show two decimal places). 3. For Staples: a. Highlight cells A2.D2 and A7.D8 on the Profit Ratios work sheet. b. Click on the Chart Wizard or select INSERT CHART. Step 1 Chart Type - Select "Line with markers displayed at each data value" - NEXT Step 2 Chart Source Data - NEXT Step 3 Chart Options - Titles Tab: Chart Title (Include a company name and a report title.) X-axis and Y-axis should include descriptive title. Axes Tab: Category (X) axis - click on "Category" Legend Tab: Placement - click on "Bottom" Data Labels Tab: Label Contains - click on "Value" - NEXT Step 4 Chart Location - Place Chart - click on "Save as new sheet" - FINISH c. While viewing chart: 1. Change Chart Title to 16 font. 2. Change X and Y Value Axis Titles to 12 font.
