James and Gilliland describe an individual’s crisis as “the perception orexperiencing an event or situation as an intolerable difficulty that exceeds the person’s currentresources and coping mechanisms” (2014, p. 9). Crises are a part of life and will continue toimpact people. Knowing that a crisis will occur, it is essential on how someone will respond tothem. A crisis response will be confronting, responding to, and hopefully overcoming it (Taylor,2020).Types of CrisesA natural disaster includes all types of severe weather and can be seasonally andwithout warning. It has the “potential to pose a significant threat to human health and safety,property, critical infrastructure, and homeland security” (Homeland Security, para 1).A naturaldisaster can be a winter storm, tornado, flood, hurricane, earthquake, or wildfire. According toJames and Gilliland, a natural disaster can be categorized as a systemic crisis due to themcausing trauma and economic damage (2017). Currently, many states have felt the impact ofHurricane Ida; it caused devastating floods, tornadoes, and torrential rain (Baldwin et al., 2021).The COVID-19 pandemic is a crisis that has had a huge impact on people's lives.
