(i) The phrase structure rules that we talked about in class do not generate this sentence without additional assumptions. Do we have to change our rule(s)? If so, which one(s) and how? If not, what additional assumption(s) do we need to make and what are the consequence of the assumption(s)? Justify your answer. Answer: In the sentence above, is very beautiful is a VP which contains the AP very beautiful . However, our rules do not allow an AP inside of VP. To generate the sentence, we can change our rules so that an AP is included inside the VP rule. (Here is another possible answer, which I accepted, though it is hard to provide
