WRD 104 Into The Wild Discuss the role of setting in the text and how it helps to establish the overall tone of Into The Wild . Christopher Johnson McCandless was born February 12, 1968. He was born in El Segundo , California to a pretty financially stable family. As Christopher grew up he started having problems with his family which eventually caused him much stress and encouraged him to one day leave his family without even warning them or contacting them at all. With a lot on his mind, he decided to travel alone in the heart of Alaska without a care for life. On Chris’s adventure he was much unprepared and didn’t have half of the skills he needed to survive in the wilderness. Alex admitted that the only food in his pack was a ten-pound bag of rice. Chris came across many people on his adventure one being the man who picked Chris up when he was hitching. His name was Gallien. Alex’s book bag looked as though it weighed only twenty-five or thirty pounds, which struck Gallien-an accomplished hunter and woodsman-as an improbably light load for a stay of several months in the back country, especially so early in the spring.
