Study Guide for Exam 2, Jazz History, October 12 This exam covers chapters 4 and 5. There will be 60 total questions, 50 of which will be  matching, true/false or multiple choice.  There will also be 10 listening questions  that will be drawn from class discussion and the synopses found in the book and  on Blackboard, and may cover music styles, artists, label, etc Chapter 4: Terms and concepts to know Chicago: - Reasons why it became an important jazz center in the 20s (Prohibition, the Great Migration, etc) - Black Belt; the club scene (North Side and South Side, the Lincoln Gardens) - Urban gangs, bootlegging, speakeasies - The emergence of the 1 st  major white contributors to jazz (Austin High Gang) - Why the demise of the Chicago scene came at the end of the 20s Recording: acoustical and electrical processes; Gannett Studio Scat singing Cadenza ‘Trumpet’ style: who played it; octaves C-Melody sax: who played it and what it is Classic Blues: - What, when, how - Race records/labels: what they were and who recorded them
