Religion FINAL – 12/12/07 Jeff Stinson 2. In your judgement can American public life become more communitarian and less individualistic? Yes. If “The Good Society” is not possible then surely a better one than the current one in which we live is possible. People are individualistic because that is how our government and society is structured. We tend to put too much weight on individual success and not enough on the success of America as a whole. I truly believe that with a more internal focus we (individuals and the government) can become more communitarian and be a more successful and productive society. The first step would be to fix our problems in our own country before we try to fix other countries. Yes, Democracy is great and vital to human rights around the world, but unless a clear and eminent threat is presented to our country’s security or to human rights, our government must maintain focus on our own domestic affairs for the time being. This does NOT mean that we stop diplomacy with other countries or provide no aide to Africa and other third world
