The Germinators vs. the Non-Germinators Abstract: Pea plants use a process of cellular respiration called photosynthesis in which they oxidize glucose and produce oxygen and energy in the form of ATP. The peas give off oxygen into their surrounding environment and use the ATP to carry out cellular processes. In this experiment, the effect of temperature on the rate of respiration of both germinating and non-germinating peas was tested by using a respiration chamber and an oxygen and carbon dioxide gas detector. We placed non-germinating peas into the respiration chamber and measured the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the chamber for 10 minutes. We then placed germinating peas in the respiration chamber and measured the oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations for 10 minutes. We lowered the germinating pea temperature to freezing and measure the oxygen and carbon dioxide concentration in the chamber for 10 minutes. The non-germinating peas and the germinating peas at freezing did not respire as the oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the chamber were the same at the beginning and the end. The germinating peas at room temperature showed rates of respiration as there was more oxygen in the chamber and less carbon dioxide than at the beginning of the 10 minute data-collection period.
