Intermittent and Perennial Streams in North Carolina- Their Aquatic Life and Policy for Their   Protection Summary: The main goal of this study was to quantify and document the species that live in  different types of stream segments (ephemeral, intermittent, and perennial) so that definitions of  these segments could be more clearly defined and so the segments could be properly regulated  and protected under the State’s 401 Program under the Department of Water Quality (DWQ).  Fourteen streams located in parks and different areas of the state were selected.  Each stream  was then divided into segments based on criteria from the DWQ’s stream determination form.  The segments were then classified by typed based on points earned.  Rain gages and wells  were installed at the Northern Outer Piedmont sites and were monitored weekly while the other  sites were visited quarterly.  Sampling occurred at three different seasons and flow conditions  (May, September, and February).  A stratified random sample was used to select which  segment of stream was to be used for sampling.  If no water was present, macroinvertebrates  were collected from a 200 cm² to a depth of 10 cm.  If water was present, macroinvertebrates  were collected by the same method, two sweeps with a dip net were made, and 10 rocks were  washed to collect invertebrates.   The results of this study show that stream communities are organized along a gradient  and the species richness and abundance are factors of conditions found in each segment.
