One of the worst chemical disasters in history occurred in Bhopal, India on the night of December 3, 1984 when a massive amount of methyl isocyanate gas was released from a pesticide plant into the air. This incident resulted in massive casualties, but could have been prevented if the safety device that was designed to neutralize the toxic discharge from the system had been operational (Broughton, 2005). The rupturing safety valve sent a large plume of the toxic gas into the air leading to immediate deaths that did not exclude animals and totaled approximately 3,800 people. In the slum colony close to the plant, human bodies were strewn around the streets and local hospitals were inundated with injured people requiring immediate treatment for exposure to a gas that was unknown, which led to a very chaotic and gruesome scene (Broughton, 2005). The health impacts after the incident were immense, affecting thousands of people and causing premature deaths over the next two decades. It was stated that more than half a million people were exposed to the poisonous gas and studies illustrated substantial increases in morbidity and mortality rates. This incident led to the creation of the Environment Protection Act and the Ministry of Environment and Forests. They were given the responsibility of managing
