CAT1 Lecture 10-5-06 - For Next Tuesday: commodity, why do some products hold more value than others? o Response paper: 1 page, double spaced (summary of the Marx article) Practice using own words, using simple and clear writing Summarize Marx’s argument (Get the article from the class web-site, or from library e-reserves Only use words with 1 or 2 syllables OK, you can choose 2 words that are longer. Use them as often as you need. (Circle them the first time so we know) o Read Adorno’s article on music and fetishism (also available from website) o There’s an Adorno reading guide on the website too o This is a difficult article, so you should get a head start on it - PRACTICE o Practice making ideas your own through careful reading and expression o Learn to build on ideas- and see the evolution of an idea from its simple form (in Marx) to its more elaborate form (in Adorno) o Understand the connections btwn American capitalism and your sense of who you are - CAT 1-C Web-site: o http://weber.ucsd.edu/~scarlisl/CAT.htm o old slide shows o assignments o the complete Marx reading, and Adorno, too - Orientation o Next Tuesday 7pm in Mandeville Hall o If conflict, see your TA and we can switch you to Wed. night orientation instead o All 1
