Aristotle- Observation in metaphysics of people now and at first began to philosophize owing to their wonder a. 1st question- What sort of things do people wonder about? b. 2nd question- When you need assistance/insights about these topics of wonder, to whom do you go for help 2. Reflections on the first question a. persistent (old) b. difficult to answer (lack of evidence) c. important 3. Reflections on the second question a. experience b. successful c. trustworthy C. Definition of Philosophy 1. Meaning of the term philosophy- love of wisdom 2. Wisdom- ability to provide insights into the topics of wonder 3. Informal definition- the search for insights into the topics of wonder. Search after insights into questions about reality 4. Formal definition- the rational investigation into fundamental assertions concerning reality, knowledge (truth), and value (morality, beauty) II. Critical Thinking A. The prerequisites of critical thinking 1. Imagination- the ability to view a position from a perspective other than one's own 2. Dispassion- the ability to view a position and not let this commitment influence ones judgment B. Central activities of critical thinking 1. Analysis- the process of breaking up a position into its component parts and seeing how the parts fit together to
