3 Soccer and Politics Notwithstanding the failure of the then rather instrumental force of Corinthian Democracy in influencing the Congressional vote on the constitutional amendment of 1984 Brazil, the support and the legacy generated by that famous Brazilian movement served to not only establish the prominence of soccer but also show that soccer and politics do sometimes mix. This mixing of ideologies of soccer and politics, however, in the manifestation of Corinthian Democracy as a national character, seems to augment the complexity of this element of Brazilian history. Indeed Corinthian Democracy “left its mark” by inspiring discussions and generating interest from other “teams throughout the country” (Arbena 108). But through its less-reported failures on and off the field, and especially failures during the movement’s key moments in history, the Corinthian Democracy paid the price often suffered by innovative movements.
