Thesis: It is a variety, but its roots are linked in the fact that the histories are similar and  they broke from each other.  I. History (Related through Great Schism and Council of Brest)  a. Great Schism starting in 1054--the West split from East and later became known as Roman Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church respectively. a.i. Big split in Christianity a.ii. 1st century: Acts of the Apostles--split between Bishops of Presbyters who celebrate Eucharists and Deacons who are heavily involved in ministry to the poor a.iii. 5 authoritative regions of Christianity, all headed by bishop called patriarch: Antioch, Rome, Alexandria, Jerusalem, Constantinople a.iv. Rome made itself “head” of committee without consent of others---> Peter thought to be the bishop of Rome- Petrus means “rock” in Greek a.v. Eastern Orthodox Church and Roman Catholic Church excommunicate each other--> each claims to be descendent of Christianity and opposing Church is heresy a.vi.
