Kevin Flaherty Dr. Otto Carroll 1302 January 10 2007 Feminist Marxist paper: Brute Anton Chekhov wrote the play “Brute” in 1881 and it was officially banned in Russia because it claimed it’s themes and characters were coarse and improper (Literature…1062). The two main characters in the play are Mrs. Popov and Mr. Smirnov. Mrs. Popov is portrayed as a person who is very emotional, and has a very short temper, and Mr. Smirnov is a tax collector. I have used several respectable resources to write this paper. In my paper I will be writing about the play called “The Brute”, using the feminist and Marxist method. In the play women are portrayed negatively and I intend on using the play as a resource to prove my point. “Talk to a women? I’d rather sit on a barrel of dynamite, the very thought gives me gooseflesh. Women! Creatures of poetry and Romance!” (Anton…1066).
