Makes energy for your body Why does cellular respiration have to occur in steps? Energy must be slowly released from the food that you eat. The process of slowly releasing the energy from your food involves a series of reactions we call cellular metabolism. What molecule are we breaking down in cellular respiration? Glucose What is the difference between an anaerobic and an aerobic process? If the process requires oxygen, then it is called aerobic respiration and if the process does not require oxygen, then it is called anaerobic respiration. What is a redox reaction? (…reduction/oxidation reaction) When one molecule transfers an electron to another molecule What do we mean when we say that a molecule is oxidized? Reduced? The molecule that receives the electron is said to be reduced and the molecule that gives up the electron is said to be oxidized. What is OILRIG? Is NAD+ the reduced or oxidized form? How about NADH? NAD + is the oxidized form and NADH is the reduced form Is FAD the reduced or oxidized form? How about FADH 2 ? FAD is the oxidized form and FADH 2 is the reduced form What is the purpose of the above two molecules? A substrate that competes for the active site. What is a non-competitive inhibitor? A substrate that binds to a site other than the active site changing the shape of the active site.
