Frequency- the number of waves that pass a point in a unit of time (v) 1. Measured in hertz 3. Amplitude- the maximum height of the wave 1. Measured in nodes 4. Speed = wavelength x frequency 2. Standing waves 1. Think guitar string 2. Has two or more points of no amplitude 3. Only certain wavelengths are possible 3. Visible spectrum of light 2. Planck, Einstein, Energy, and Photons 1. Planck’s Equation 1. Radiation is also emitted with wavelengths both shorter and longer than those of visible light 2. The vibrating atoms in a heated object give rise to the emitted electromagnetic radiation 1. The vibrations are quantized- only certain vibrations are allowed 3. Planck’s constant: 6.63 X 10 -34 4. The spectrum of light is emitted with a maximum intensity at some wavelength 2. Einstein and the Photoelectric Effect 1. Photoelectric effect- the ejection of electrons with light strikes the surface of a metal
