December 6, 2007 Chapter 9: Bonding and Molecular Structure- Fundamental Concepts 1. Valence Electrons 1. For the main groups, the number of valance electrons is the group number 2. For transition elements it is the extra configurations after the noble gas 3. Lewis symbols for atoms 1. The noble gasses have eight valance electrons and have a lack of reactivity 2. Chemical Bond formation 1. Chemical bond- attractive force 1. Ionic bond when one or more valance electrons are transferred from one atom to another 1. The bond between positive and negative ions 2. covalent bond- sharing of valance electrons between atoms 3. Covalent Bonding and Lewis Structures 1. The octet rule 2. Drawing Lewis Structures 1. The central atom is usually the one with the least negative electron affinity 2. Determine the total number of valence electrons 1. This is the sum of the valence electrons for each atom 2. watch for anions and cations 3. draw single bonds between the central atom and all the terminal atoms 4. use any remaining lone pairs on the terminal atoms first 1. only if there are pairs left over assign them to the central atoms
