One major similarity between a short story and a poem is the story being told. Both tell a story yet one is simply shorter than the other. The differences are vast main in the way of delivery. Poems have a tendency to rhyme in some form or fashion. I enjoyed the short video by Heather Auger who explained how a poem is derived in the same way as any story. Once the writer knows the basis of the story it is “distilled” or shortened to and delivered in a rhyme or rhythm. Because of the poem’s length, each individual word plays an important role in the story containing an emotion or being symbolic in some way. Clugston wrote on the topic of poetry saying that, “it is more accurate to say that poetry is an evocative response to ordinary life experience” (Clugston, 2014). This implies that in order to become good at writing poetry, it requires a certain amount of an empathetic emotional response to all life’s conditions. The
