Spring 2015 Physics 172 – Recitation 1 Newton’s First Law of Motion The purpose of this recitation is to give you some experience using vectors to represent an object’s motion and Newton’s first law of Motion. Readings: Sections 1.1-1.7 Learning Objectives: 1.2 Identify whether or not an object is interacting with its surroundings in any given situation 1.2 Use diagrams to represent an object’s motion 1.3 Use Newton's first law 1.5-1.7 Use vectors to relate physical properties like an object’s changing position and its average or instantaneous velocity. Problem: A hockey puck is sliding on the smooth ice surface of a skating rink. This figureshows the puck’s position on the ice surface at a sequence of equally spaced times t0, t1, t2, t3and t4. The xaxis shown is parallel to the rink’s length and the yaxis to its width. The marks along the axes are spaced 1 meter apart. The unseen zaxis points straight up out of the page. Make a sketch of the figure on your white board, and work with your partners to answer
