Natural Science Lecture 02/10/2007 11:58:00 Readings: Kardong   o  Time pg. 85-106 (not much on midterm) o Selection pg. 119-129 Larson o Chap. 5 pg. 119-129 Pangenesis Go to aquarium between Oct. 8 and Oct. 16. BRING BOOK After the Origin: Many anticipated Darwin’s arguments would shed light on “a mystery of  mysteries” But there were problems with the mechanisms of his theory o Lord Kelvin, William Thompson: Age of Earth:  calculated by cooling of a sphere to be 24 million to 100 million  years old. Darwin claimed – 1 billion years old.  Pg. 82(bottom)  Kardong.  Went around to various places and measured the  heat in deep caves.  Problem: Radioactivity. When radioactive  elements deplete they give off heat which changed things.  Uranium and Thorium.   o Source of Variation: Cuvier observed organisms produce only bodies similar to  themselves BUT over generations could have alterations to the
