Eng-200 Mrs. Peresie Family Relationships 30 January 2013 Father’s and Their Sons In August Wilson’s play, Fences, we can learn a lot about how relationships between fathers and sons. We see the roles Troy and his son, Cory, play and how each one affects the other as the story progresses. The way Troy acts towards Cory comes from the way he was brought up and how his father treated him. The relationship between Troy and Cory is a very stressed and uneasy one. Troy is a very controlling father and tries to be the deciding factor in almost every aspect of Cory’s life. Towards the end of the first act we learn that Troy talked to the football coach and told him that Cory had to quit the team, “Yeah, I did it. And the boy know why I did it.” Troy wanted Cory to work and do his chores around the house instead of playing football.
