TA: Joseph Brito:[email protected]Office Hours: by appointment Summary This course examines the continuities and changes in Jewish society, institutions, concepts, and traditions from ancient times to the present. It also provides an introduction to Jewish practice and belief in its contemporary diversity, including a survey of the rituals, symbols, and ceremonies of Jews today. The concept of community will be given particular emphasis as well as the musical and liturgical practices of Jews past and present, to explore fundamental questions about the nature of religious practice and how it is transmitted in collective contexts. Learning Objectives To define key terms and explain basic aspects of Judaism (sabbath, holidays, life-cycle rituals, textual sources) To explain differences between Jewish denominations and traditions To develop a good knowledge of Jewish history and some of its key figures To develop knowledge about different Jewish communities around the world and their distinctive practices Each Class: For each session you are asked to prepare a number of primary texts and secondary readings. It is imperative that you prepare the readings and that you bring the relevant readings to each class. Assignments and Exam During the course of the semester, you will be asked to write response papers approximately once per week (2 pages). Papers will be due by the start of class on Tuesdays except when there is no class (see the class schedule for due dates). The papers must be submitted by email as a
2Word document to both the professor and the TA. You should submit a total of 5 papers (in the thirteen weeks of the course, beginning in week 2). Students may choose for which weeks they would like to submit response papers, but these must be received on time. Your response paper can address either the readings for the Tuesday or the Thursday that week. The response papers should not merely summarize the material, but rather critically engage withthat week’s topic and respond to the major questions of the course. See the response rubric on moodle to guide your reading and analysis. For the grading criteria, see below. In addition to the response papers, there will also be two quizzes on the terms learned in class as well as a take-home final. Details will follow on all aspects of the final exam. *Owing to the days missed for the Jewish holidays, an extra credit“film review”assignment is being offered for interested students. It is worth up to 5% of your grade. The assignment is to view the filmUshpizin, available via Concordia’s subscription to Criterion on Demand, and to answer questions about the film on the assignment sheet (on moodle).
