10/24/11 W131 Microtheme 4 In the essay Monster Theory (Seven Theses) by Jeffrey Cohen, Cohen explains that when a society has to look at its previous actions and attempt to change its values is where a “monster” is born. Cohen elaborates on the idea that a “monster” is a being that takes on negative characteristics that are generally decided upon by a certain culture. The negative characteristic’s Cohen deems most important for a monster are blatant in his essay, “the Monster’s body quite literally incorporates fear, desire, anxiety, and fantasy”(69). Specifically, Cohen’s first thesis emphasizes “Monsters are the embodiment of a cultural moment”(69), meaning that monster is created to suit a specific society’s values. American society has always looked at the classic good triumphing over evil scenario as a way of life.
